Report from Grover Click’s kitchen: I’m often teased when people happen to be in my kitchen and see how many cans of tomato soup are there. Heinz cream of tomato soup. For me, it’s the essence of celebrating the ordinary when it comes to soup. I love it. No pizzazz, not fashionable like bouillabaisse, gumbo, pho, or, in summer, gazpacho or vichyssoise.

I was delighted when I came across an article by Caitlin Moran in The Times Magazine saterday. She was writing about what her choice would be if she were on death row and had to choose her last meal. “Soup,” she says. “In a world before IV drips, it was soup that kept invalids going. Even now, if you have a cold, what is it that you require? A tin of Heinz cream of tomato soup. Heinz cream of tomato soup is the NHS in a tin.”
