July 25 is National Merry-Go-Round Day. It’s the day in 1871 the first U.S. patent was issued for a merry-go-round. It was issued to William Schneider in Davenport, Iowa.
This commemorative day was established by the National Carousel Association.
Riding a merry-go-round is a fine form of safe excitement. When the DMC began in New York, one of our favorite outdoor activities was riding the Central Park Carousel. It’s located in the southwest corner of the park between the New York Athletic Club and Tavern on the Green.
If you are visiting New York, be sure to have this on your list of things to do.
Merry-go-rounds like we know then today, people riding horses for amusement, originated in medieval France. Originally, they were for knights to practice their swordsmanship.
