The second Saturday and Sunday in May is National Windmill Day in Holland. 950 windmills open their doors to visitors.
For centuries, these mills have played an important role in reclaiming land, processing raw materials, and manufacturing products. Although they have little production value these days, they have become icons of Holland, they are valuable for tourism.
Mill owners decorate their mills with flags and flowers. They will take you on a tour explaining the type of mill you are visiting. Fun activities are often organized for children — allowing them to become familiar with the miller’s trade in a playful way. They might be asked to take turns at turning the sails.
