Melbourne city officials assigned ID numbers and email addresses to trees in 2013 for people to report problems like dangerous hanging branches.
An unintended and surprising consequence: people do more than report problems, they also write directly to the trees.
“The email interactions reveal the love Melburnians have for our trees,” a city official said.
